Panoramic Hiking Trail – Kryoneri
General information:
The hiking trail “Panoramic Hiking Trail – Kryoneri” is a path alongside beautiful panorama views, vast olive groves, and an apple orchard. Going through different vegetation and passing by three small rivers that are often dry in summer but full in winter as well as seeing a part of Kryoneri gives a very pleasant overview of the village and its surroundings. On the path you also encounter culturally important places like the amphitheater where the trail starts, the old mill and fountain which are being rebuilt, as well as the Saint George church.
- Distance: 4,19 km
- Duration: 1 h (+ the other half of the tour) (dates are inaccurate)
- Difficulty: easy/medium
- Hiking gear: walking boots or hiking sandals, water bottle, a hat, trekking poles (if you need extra support)
- Attractions: amphitheater, the old mill, old fountain, olive groves, apple orchard, St. Georgs church, cultural center
The trail begins at the amphitheater and passes by a cafe, the cultural center, and the school before leaving the village entirely. Then continuing on this road you can find the church of Saint George with a breathtaking panorama view over the mountains and the sea. After that, the road moves downhill alongside stunning scenic views until it finishes at the dirt road that leads past the charming green olive groves to the bottom of the mountain. Proceeding with the walk, you even go through said trees as well as the apple orchard and the vineyards. During the entire length of the hike, various rock facades can be seen from afar as well as right beside the trail. They are made out of different rock types which showcase diverse colors and structures. After making it to the end of the olive grove the trail continues uphill until it arrives at the Kourperi fountain (link?), an important cultural point of interest for Kryoneri as it has existed since the 18th Century. Not far from this fountain, the trail comes to an end at the old mill (link?) that is being rebuilt at the moment as it has a long history of existence and has guaranteed the village’s survival during the Second World War. There you can also see the last great view through the mill’s windows before the trail comes to an end.
There is the possibility to do a circular hiking trail by combining this path and another trail which goes from the old mill up to Kryoneri. For example the Elisson River Trail or the “Pirona” Hiking Trail. Other combinations are also possible.
