Mycenaean tombs

General information

Next to the cemetery of Kryoneri, on a landsite called “Panagia”, there is an ancient Mycenaean burial enclosure with 9 vaulted tombs. These tombs were carved on the slope of the valley of Elissona on three levels.

In the past, the tombs have served the purpose of being a shelter for the inhabitants during periods of raids. They were also used as guerrilla hideouts during the Occupation. According to the testimonies of former priest Christos Papanikolaou, performances of religious services, sometimes attended by more than 60 people, have taken place there as well.

The famous archaeologist Orlandos researched the site in the 1950s.

Example of the Mycenaean grave construction like the ones that can be found in Kryoneri.
