Fountains held a very important role in rural life. In particular, one of the biggest problems faced by the locals was the accessibility of a water source within walking distance from their homes, both to meet their individual needs and to meet the needs of small and large animals, especially during the summer. Apart from meeting the above needs, the existence of a fountain also played a social role as it was a meeting point for women who went there with containers (pitchers or barrels) to carry water and to wash their clothes. This gave them the opportunity to chat and learn the news of the village. These conditions prevailed until the early 1960s, when the irrigation network of Kryoneri was created, putting an end to this tedious process.
