Apagoremeno and Observatory Hiking Trail

General information

The hiking trail “Forbidden and Observatory” leads through the vineyards in the northeast of Kryoneri to the Observatory of Kryoneri. The Kryoneri Astronomical Station was established in 1972 at an altitude of 1,000 meters, on the top of Mount Kyllini, covering an area of 65 acres (later expanded to 105 acres). The station is located in the region of Corinth, in the northern Peloponnese, just 22 km from the nearest town, Kiato. The station has a 1.2 m Cassegrain reflecting telescope, which was installed in 1975 and is now one of the largest telescopes in Greece and the Balkans.

The Apagoremeno hiking trail can be combined with the Observatory hiking trail which leads to the National Observatory in Kryoneri. It will take you another 15 minutes from the Apagoremeno Junction to reach the Observatory. From there you can walk the same way back to the village. When you get to the main road, you can also turn left and walk to the “Our Lady in Rapsomati” church on the hill. From there you just follow the road to get back to the Amphitheatre.
