The “Righteous Among the Nations” award

More than 26,000 people around the world have received the prestigious award, including more than 335 brave Greeks. 74 years after the liberation of Greece from German occupation, two “Righteous Among the Nations” awards will be granted on this occasion – one to the Rev. Nikolaos Athensoulis, who saved the lives of Rivka Jakobi and her family in 1943-1944.

Second visit

On June 7th 2017, Rivka arrived in Kryoneri, which she knew by “Matsani” back in 1943. She came back to the village accompanied by her husband, Benny, her youngest daughter Rina and Rina’s friend Ila, who videotaped both visits.

Lehova Cave (Neolithic)

In the vicinity of the Lechova Monastery, there is a prehistoric cave called “The cave temple of LEHOVO”, which is 800 V.-VA. Its lacustrine concave comprises of a main room, with stalactites scattered all around the ceiling.

Mycenaean tombs

Next to the cemetery of Kryoneri, is an ancient Mycenaean burial enclosure with 10 vaulted tombs. These tombs were carved on the slope of the valley of Elissona on three levels.

Karamanos cave

The Karamanos Cave is one of the many caves in the area, which was used from ancient times by shepherds until the 1960s. It served mainly as a winter shelter to protect flocks of sheep and goats from the harsh weather.

Lechova Monastery

Located 5 km southwest from Kryoneri and 17 kilometers southwest of the ancient Sikyon, is the “Virgin Mary” Monastery LECHOVA. It was built on the foothills of Titan (Vesiza) mountain at an altitude of 1050 meters. The monastery currently serves as a nunnery, inhabited by about 10 nuns.
