From 16 to 20 October 2024 the Community of Kryoneri Corinthia successfully hosted the International School of Observational Astrophysics, “NEON observing school”, for PhD students, organized by the National Observatory of Athens – Institute of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing and the German Max Planck Institute of Astronomy.
Following the successful seminar of the National Observatory in the autumn of 2023, Kryoneri was chosen again this year as the venue for this year’s international scientific activity.
During the NEON International School, astrophysics professors from the universities of Stockholm, Copenhagen and Munich, as well as from the European Observatory in Chile (ESO), the Konkoly Observatory in Hungary and of course from the National Observatory of Athens gave lectures.
The students came mainly from Europe (Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Hungary, Portugal, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Greece and Hungary), but also from outside Europe (Chile, Brazil, Kenya, India, Iran and Kazakhstan).
The NEON International School combined theory and practice in Kryoneri (with night observation at the Kryoneri Observatory) and also took place in Kalavryta (Aristarchus Telescope).
This great international activity was an advertisement for our country and our region, and it was an opportunity to prove that we are able to host similar events in the future, in the new conference rooms of the first floor of the Polykentro of Kryoneri.
The hosting of astronomy students and professors was perfectly supported this year, as in 2023, in Kryoneri by the local authorities, ensuring excellent conditions for scientific work in a vibrant rural community.
